The Skyhawks hot start could be a sign of what’s to come in 2024

By Devrin Thomas

With more than half of the season left, the Skyhawks’ fiery start could be a season of great promise for the men's basketball program.

Following a strong win against Ellsworth on the 28th, the Skyhawks closed out November still undefeated, stacking up double digit wins in their last five contests.

Unfortunately, the Skyhawks were later handed their first loss of the season in a tough 92-72 defeat against undefeated South Plains who after the victory over the Skyhawks were then ranked the number one team in the nation.

Despite the tough loss the Skyhawks have stormed out of the gate with a 7-1 record on the season which is their best start through eight games in three years.

The guiding light to this early season’s success has been the ferocity that the Skyhawks have brought on the defensive side of the floor.

Through the first eight games the Skyhawks have tallied a team combined 83 steals with their team leader sophomore guard Jaden Burress ranking second among all players in the region in steals with 26 so far.

With only two home games in the entire month of December the Skyhawks were set for a tough stretch of play during those few weeks.
